Income Report: All the Numbers Behind My 2016 Bestseller, Will It Fly

In February 2016 I published my first business book, called Will It Fly? How to Test Your Next Business Idea So You Don’t Waste Your Time and Money. Before that I’d published my first ever book, a memoir called Let Go. Will It Fly? has been very successful, and I hope it sets a baseline for what can be achieved with Superfans, my next book that’s coming out on August 13. In this blog post, I want to share all the numbers behind that success, through a detailed income report on the earnings for Will It Fly? since the book was launched. The Return of the Income Report It’s been three years and four months since Will It Fly? came out. Today, I’m going to share all the numbers we’ve tracked over that time, including ebook sales, paperback sales, audiobook sales, and audiobook bounty unit sales. (I’ll explain what that […]

Will It Fly? Becomes a Bestseller! Shout-Outs to All Who Helped

My new book, Will It Fly?, is now a bestseller! It hit #1 in all business related categories on Amazon this week, including #1 in Entrepreneurship, #1 in Startups, and even #1 in Self-Help/Motivational. Furthermore, the paperback copy of the book got up to #80 Overall Best Seller (out of all books!), and the Kindle version climbed to Top #22 Overall Best Seller in the Kindle Store. And at one point, both the Kindle and Paperback copy were both #1 and #2 in the Entrepreneurial category, which was super cool to see: It’s still pretty crazy to me to see it do so well in the rankings, surpassing several authors who I admire and very well-known books that have been around for ages. Of course, I’m coming off the excitement of the launch and the true test is how well will the book do over the long haul, but based on many of the comments […]

Lessons Learned from a Best-Selling Self-Published Author – SPI TV Ep. 55

One of my podcast listeners asked me, “Now that your first self-published, print book has been out in the world for six months, how is it doing? What did you learn from the process of creating Will It Fly?” I thought I’d answer that question in this special episode of SPI TV and offer you guys my honest thoughts about what I learned about being a self-published author from Will It Fly?. If you feel like you’ve got a book in you—and I believe almost everyone does—this episode is for you. I’ll share all those surprising moments, unexpected challenges, successes, and lessons learned from writing Will It Fly?. Will It Fly? from Start to Finish—How I Wrote a Wall Street Journal Bestseller – Part 1

When I was close to finishing the manuscript for my new book, Will It Fly?, my author coach (and more than anything else, accountability coach) for this project, Azul Terronez, said something that took me by surprise: “It’ll be fun to see how many books you sell. You might even get on some of the bestseller lists.” When I made the decision to self-publish Will It Fly? last year, I also made the choice to not worry about getting on the bestseller lists, because I didn’t think it was possible as a self-published author. After some research, however, I found out that it is possible, but it’s no easy task. After even more research, I realized just how ambiguous these lists can be, and what I learned became a real turn off. You might think that a bestselling book is one that sells the most copies, but that’s not exactly […]

And when I say “in store for you,” I really mean for you. I’ll tell you what exactly that means in a second, but for now, let’s take a quick look back at 2015 and some important milestones that happened: The blog posts here on SPI became more consistent, which was a major goal for 2015. The SPI Podcast and AskPat continue to rock and roll, now combining for more than twenty-six million total downloads. My goal was to hit twenty-five million by the end of the year. The YouTube channel was reborn and SPI TV launched in February. We gained an extra twenty thousand YouTube Subscribers as a result—shy of my twenty-five thousand goal, but I’m still […]
