Website Redesign—One Year Later (Critical Lessons Learned)

It’s been a year since the latest major redesign of the Smart Passive Income blog, and I wanted to give you an over-the-shoulder look at what has happened since, including all the great things and the not-so-great things. I also want to highlight some of the latest features and updates we’ve added based on what we learned. Let’s do this! The design before the recent update wasn’t terrible. In fact, it was great! We actually converted the custom theme into a distributable WordPress theme that hundreds of people have since downloaded and are now using for their own website. It’s called the SPI Pro Theme, and you can check it out here on StudioPress. It was the number one downloaded theme for a couple of months after it was released, which is awesome! [Full Disclosure: As an affiliate, I receive compensation if you purchase through this link.] The older site worked […]

My December 2016 Monthly Income Report

I always get excited at the end of each year, not only because Christmas is my favorite time of year (and my birthday happens to land in December), but because I get to reflect on the lessons learned and examine the numbers to see what’s been working, and what I can improve. We shouldn’t have to wait until the end of the year to reflect on these kinds of things, but we can’t help it because the calendar year neatly wraps up the past, and helps us imagine the future. So for today, I’m excited to dive into last month’s earnings and progress report, and how I’m setting myself up for success in 2017. Let’s get to it! Goings On in December As you may remember from my November Income Report, I went into December sick as a dog. It was a rough start to the month after getting food […]

He began building tutorials for his favorite projects and posting them online for other passionate programmers to learn. Within a year, OpenHomeAutomation.net went from 20 visitors a day to 2,000. Marco found success by consistently providing value to his audience, optimizing his website and business processes, and carving out space in a niche he loved. My August 2016 Monthly Income Report

Welcome to my August 2016 Monthly Income Report! Historically, August earnings take a dip for me, and I’ve heard the same from many other online businesses too, both large and small. This drop is most likely due to the summer season, where many people take a break from focusing primarily on work or building their business. It’ll be interesting to see where August 2016 stacks up against the rest of the year, but before we get to the income breakdown, let’s talk about the latest happenings across some of my businesses. Latest Goings-On in August The biggest announcement in August was the brand new SPI Pro Theme, which became available for WordPress users worldwide this month. Through a partnership with the team over at StudioPress, we were able to re-engineer the SPI theme that was used on this site between 2013 and early 2016 to one that could be distributed […]

SPI 229: Tips for Building a Simple and Effective Website and Brand with Jess Catorc

One of the best parts of my job is hearing from listeners about how the Smart Passive Income Podcast has helped them transform their careers. Today’s guest is one of those listeners: She’s Jess Catorc, a web designer who’s built a successful business teaching fellow entrepreneurs how to build their own websites. Jess grabbed my attention in an unconventional way: She sent me a personalized video that introduced her, her journey as a business owner, and how SPI has helped her along the way. I was floored by how quickly Jess has turned her passion—designing for the web—into a thriving business empire that includes online courses, a podcast, and a video series. I had to hear how she’s done it. In today’s episode, not only will your hear the story of Jess’s business journey, but you’ll get her expert advice on building a website as well. She’ll share her favorite platforms and tools, her tips on hosting and security, […]

Announcing the SPI Pro Theme on StudioPress!

For years, people have asked me to create a WordPress theme that is easy to use, effective, and looks great. In fact, between December 2013 and April 2016, I had hundreds of requests for the exact theme I was using before I radically upgraded SPI earlier this year. I even found a few websites who ripped off the design of my previous theme, which was flattering, but also kind of sad because no one had asked for permission. Still, it was validation that it was a theme people wanted. And trust me, I wanted to create that theme and distribute it myself, but theme development and distribution is an entirely new kind of business that involves a LOT of moving parts, including constant upgrades to serve new versions of WordPress, customer service, plugin compatibilities, and more. To sum it up, it just wasn’t in my wheelhouse and I didn’t want […]

Podcasting and the Stats that Really Matter

I received a great voicemail question for AskPat that I decided to answer in this blog post instead of on the podcast. Pat, I’m starting a podcast soon and I want to know what you think the most important metrics are related to podcasting that I should worry about. What should I be paying close attention to understand if this is working or not? Since coming back from Podcast Movement earlier this month, a lot has been on my mind in the world of podcasting, and as more and more people begin to start their own shows, more and more people are going to wonder about the answer to this very question. On the other hand, many people won’t even realize just how important this question really is, which is why I’m sharing it here today. It’s crucial to ask ourselves these questions about success metrics because unless you know […]

SPI 219: How Meghan Telpner’s Culinary Nutrition Academy Makes You Rethink Traditional Online Courses

Meet Meghan Telpner, founder of The Academy of Culinary Nutrition, an online certification program with a jaw-dropping 97 percent success rate. Meghan’s students are clamoring to pay top dollar for her nutrition certification course, and I’ve invited her here today to find out why. Before creating her wildly successful online course, Meghan taught aspiring nutritionists out of her home, but meeting demand wasn’t easy. Transitioning to online meant she could reach a greater audience, generate more income, and enjoy more time to herself. That transition has paid off in a huge way: Not only is her course more successful than ever, but Meghan was also just ranked as one of the top 100 female entrepreneurs in Canada by PROFIT magazine! Meghan’s course requires a serious investment from its students—financially, energetically, and mentally. Today, Meghan’s going to share exactly how she attracts students willing to make that investment, how she continues to grow her course, and […]

My April 2016 Monthly Income Report

Welcome to my April 2016 Monthly Income Report! Each month I construct a brand new detailed report that covers the latest goings-on across all of my online businesses, including wins, failures, lessons learned, and exact dollar amounts from each of my income streams. If you’d like to get a snapshot of my income growth over time, and a list of all of the previous income reports I’ve published since I started doing these back in 2008, please visit my income reports page. If this is your first time seeing one of these reports, you might be wondering why I take the time to write them up. Or, even further, why I choose to reveal my income details publicly here on the blog. I see it like this: It’s sort of like how companies in the stock market publicly report their earnings. They do this so that their investors can understand […]

A Deep Look Into the Top 5 Posts on SPI, and Why They Were So Popular

As I’ve mentioned in the past, I love to see what’s working. If a particular SPI blog post or page is performing well, and it is resonating strongly with the community, I know we’ve done something right. We’ve created something that’s of value, which is what it’s all about it. I also love to analyze data, so it’s a good excuse to jump into that. Social media shares, blog post comments, page views. All of these data points are key indicators to the popularity of your content. So that’s what I wanted to get into today: some of the most popular content on SPI, why it is popular, and a few key lessons we learned along the way. Before I jump into the Top 5 Posts on SPI though, I wanted to start with a few of the most popular SPI pages. Some of these pages are actually viewed more […]

My March 2016 Monthly Income Report

Welcome to another monthly income report here on Smart Passive Income! I’ve been publishing these reports since I started monetizing websites back in 2008, but I’m happy to say that this report in particular is very special. Why? One, it’s the first report published on the newly redesigned SPI blog that went live last week. Two, we’re changing up the design of the report specifically, with a new look and a few exciting features. Previously, my Monthly Income Reports included lessons learned and a list of my income sources. But now you’ll see a completely new look that features a spreadsheet style layout of the income, along with the percentage difference from the previous month and totals for various types of income sources. I hope you like the new look and feel! As always, I will continue to include the knowledge and lessons I’ve picked up over the past month. […]
