Is YouTube Even Worth it Anymore? Life after Getting Serious about Video

Is YouTube even worth it anymore? I share what’s worked for me on YouTube, what hasn’t worked, YouTube strategies, and YouTube for me going forward! Pat Flynn May 6, 2019 I’ve had a YouTube channel since 2009. But for most of that time, I didn’t really take this platform all that seriously. That all changed in February 2018. Since then, I’ve jumped into the deep end with YouTube, treating it like a primary platform for a lot of my content. In this post, I want to share with you why I made this big shift, and how it’s worked out so far. Getting Serious About YouTube: The Experiment In the time I’ve been in the YouTube game, I’ve scaled new heights … and occasionally fallen flat. Some of my videos have done very well, getting over 500,000 views. Others have barely made a mark. Until recently, though, I didn’t consider […]

How to Build a YouTube Brand that Makes an Impact with Tim Schmoyer

Pat Flynn: By the year 2020, Google says, which is a little bit scary—that’s next year—they say that ninety percent of all content consumption will be through video. That’s a pretty significant percentage. And they have access to data that may actually show that they are right. Obviously, they own YouTube and now Linkedin is on the video train, Facebook, Facebook Watch, Instagram video, IGTV . . . Video is here to stay and whether you believe the ninety percent number is actually going to happen, we can all agree likely that a large amount of the percentage is going to be video consumption. So it’s really important that we understand how to create videos, and not just videos that are often one-off answers to certain questions and things like that, but videos that can actually gain a following, build a community, help us in our business. And today I’m […]

3 Ways to Use YouTube to Grow Your Business & Make Money with Sean Cannell

Sean Cannell: So I walk up to the counter. I don’t even know her name yet, right? I’m just like, “Hey. Can I get an Americano, and will you marry me?” Then I lean over the counter and I kiss her on the lips. How do you think that would’ve went? Pat Flynn: You’d probably be kicked out. Sean Cannell: Yeah. I might have been arrested. Pat Flynn: Don’t worry. That actually didn’t happen. But that was our guest, Sean Cannell, today talking about what some people do when they market, what it’s like. It’s like building a relationship with people. That’s what we do online. But some people go way too fast and get right to the call to action a little too soon. Sean’s superpower is with video marketing. He’s known for a couple large channels on YouTube: Video Influencers, and also Think Media. He’s personally inspired me […]

Editorial Note: Huzza, one of the services Michael discusses, is no longer available. I am testing out BeLive.tv as replacement, and Michael is now on CrowdCast.io. I’m so excited to welcome Michael Stelzner to today’s show, a longtime friend but first-time guest on the Smart Passive Income Podcast. Maybe you’ve noticed Facebook’s marketing push for its new live video feature. Maybe you’ve experimented with it yourself. Maybe you were even an early adopter of Periscope or Meerkat. Whatever your experience with live video, you’ll want to hear Mike’s predictions for where it’s headed, innovators’ creative applications of it so far, and how it could change our media landscape in the very near future. SPI 301: How a Data Scientist Pivoted into a New Brand (And Won a Tesla Roadster)

Affiliate marketing isn’t just for recommending hosting companies or your favorite company on Amazon. Today I’m talking to Ben Sullins, the founder of Teslanomics. He tuned into the signals his YouTube channel was giving him, making a complete pivot into the Tesla space and creating a successful online business. And, he was able to refer so many people to Tesla (sixty-seven purchased Teslas!) that he actually won a brand new Tesla Roadster! Ben’s story is one of a kind. He started with a career in data science—consulting with Silicon Valley giants like Facebook and Mozilla—while creating online courses in the meantime. Eventually he decided he wanted more flexibility and time when it came to his income, so he left his corporate career behind. What happened next was a surprising pivot for Ben—one video led to a complete shift in his YouTube channel and a successful online business. This is an […]

My December 2017 Monthly Income Report

Welcome to my December 2017 monthly income report! We’re well into January now and things are flying over here at SPI headquarters. I’m working on getting ready for my YouTube push next month (subscribe here so you don’t miss anything) as well as some behind the scenes implementation of funnels for my online courses. More on that and other 2018 plans later in this report. In December I turned 35 years old, celebrated my son’s 8th birthday, and spent a lot of time reflecting on how the year went. Best of all, since the kids were home for two weeks for Christmas break, I got to spend most of my time with them and my wife, and I did very little in terms of heavy work. I’m thankful to be able to celebrate another successful year of business, and I’m stoked to cap off the 2017 year with one final […]

SPI 296: What’s Coming in 2018 for the Podcast and SPI

We are closing in hot on the end of the year here on SPI. Next week I’ll be recapping the year in full (the good and the bad) but today I want to give a little sneak preview of what’s coming up in 2018 for SPI. It’s going to be a very exciting year, and I can’t wait to share my plans with you! First off: the theme for 2018 is Higher Value. That doesn’t mean tons more content—a lot of us think that in order to do something better we have to do more of that thing, but actually the opposite is true. Sometimes less is more, and sometimes scaling back can have a positive impact on the quality of the content that you are publishing. What I’m talking about today is not necessarily what you should do personally. It’s a preview of what to look forward to, to […]

My November 2017 Monthly Income Report

Over the past few years, the business has become more and more like a machine. Although I’m definitely keeping myself busy with new projects, more parts of the business become automated. This is thanks to the team that I’ve built, the software we’re using, and the rules and procedures we have in place. The blog, the podcast, the emails—a lot of it is automated, which is great. I can serve more and offer even more value since the hard work was put in up front. But . . . Since growing the team and getting more hands-off, I’ve noticed I’ve had a thirst for something new to get excited about—something that would allow me creative freedom and also allow me to re-experience the journey of trying to “figure something out again,” like it was at the start of my podcast and blog. And I think I’ve found it, and it’s […]

A Blueprint for a Successful Short-Term Joint Venture Affiliate Campaign

November is Affiliate Month here on SPI. Last week we talked about long-term affiliate relationships, so today we’re going to be talking in depth about how to create a successful blueprint for a short-term JV (joint venture) affiliate promotion. How is a short-term affiliate opportunity different, and how can you plan your campaigns to take advantage of the opportunity in a shorter time span? Often there are times when you have the opportunity to promote a product that has some scarcity involved. Maybe it has limited access, discounted prices for a short time only—your goal is to crush it and become the top affiliate. Depending on the promotion, these opportunities can be golden, and you don’t want to waste the short time that you have. I’ll be talking about the different kinds of short-term affiliate opportunities available, how to get involved, and how to stand out from the other affiliates […]

SPI 289: How Live Video Can Play a Role in Your Business (and How It’s Helped Mine)

Today I’m addressing a question I keep getting asked: What am I doing with my new live video studio? Why did I set it up, what’s my plan for it, and should you be investing money in live video? Today I’m answering all those questions. We’ll be talking about live video strategy, but also how to set up a space to record in. I knew for a while that video was going to be part of my entire business strategy, especially because courses were going to be so integral. Live video can be a game-changer—it’s a really organic way to connect with your audience. And it’s especially potent on Facebook. If you go live on Facebook, you’ll get more reach than with a text update, or even an image; Facebook’s really favoring live video right now. Investing in live video is smart. Experts say that by 2020, about 90 percent […]

Bryan and Erika draw from their personal experiences as partners and parents to give their audience an honest, authentic look at how real couples resolve conflicts and grow closer. My May 2017 Monthly Income Report

Welcome to my May 2017 Monthly Income Report! There are lots of things happening in SPI land these days. Lots of investments back into the business, to be precise, but I’ll report on those in just a moment. First, for those of you who are seeing this income report for the first time, these reports are something I’ve been creating every month since October 2008. Initially, the income report was supposed to be done only once to show what had happened when I began to monetize my very first online business, Green Exam Academy. I mean, who reveals their income each month so openly? At the time, it was something I saw only one other person do, and I thought it was really cool. The reaction was so strong and positive from my readers, that I had to keep it going. In case you’re interested, you can visit the income […]
