The Sad Truth about Your Half-Finished Projects

Have you ever had a huge amount of enthusiasm for a project, only to have it fizzle out months down the road? Here’s why you’re leaving projects half finished. Pat Flynn January 16, 2017 Here is a common experience: You get incredibly excited about a new business idea or project. Maybe you’ve had it in the back of your head for a long time and something finally clicked inside of you to start working on it. Or, maybe it’s something you just thought of and you want to get it up and running as soon as possible. At work, in the car, and even in your sleep, thoughts about your new idea race through your brain. You’re not only taking mental notes about the work you need to do but you’re also imagining what it would be like when other people experience your idea and benefit from your creativity and hard work. My December 2016 Monthly Income Report

I always get excited at the end of each year, not only because Christmas is my favorite time of year (and my birthday happens to land in December), but because I get to reflect on the lessons learned and examine the numbers to see what’s been working, and what I can improve. We shouldn’t have to wait until the end of the year to reflect on these kinds of things, but we can’t help it because the calendar year neatly wraps up the past, and helps us imagine the future. So for today, I’m excited to dive into last month’s earnings and progress report, and how I’m setting myself up for success in 2017. Let’s get to it! Goings On in December As you may remember from my November Income Report, I went into December sick as a dog. It was a rough start to the month after getting food […]

Looking Ahead and Goals for 2017

2016 is almost over, and what a year it has been! Before I get to my 2017 goals, let’s look at some of the major highlights from this year: Will It Fly? was self-published and became a Wall Street Journal bestseller. The SPI blog was completely redesigned from the ground up. The SPI Podcast surpassed 30,000,000 total downloads! I launched a beta version of my first course, Smart From Scratch, which sold to 100+ students. Gross annual revenue across all of my online businesses surpassed $1 million for the first time ever! There were also some major personal highlights, including: April and I celebrated our seven-year wedding anniversary! Our youngest child started preschool, which means three days a week both kids are in school at the same time. I finally started working with a nutritionist and began meal prepping. We started making moves toward purchasing our first investment rental property. […]

My October 2016 Monthly Income Report

Welcome to my October 2016 Monthly Income Report! As we come closer to the end of 2016, I can definitely say that October was one of the busier months of the year. I traveled to speak, met some amazing people, and took my first set of test students through a brand new course that I launched. This, and more, along with the usual line-by-line itemization of my income streams, are featured in this month’s report, so let’s get right to it! Important Goings-On in October One of the most important things that happened in October was that on October 1, tickets for the Backstreet Boys in Vegas went on sale. I wanted to buy tickets for my wife, who is a hardcore BSB fan. She literally has action figures of each of the members, among other types of random BSB paraphernalia. You might think that I share this jokingly, because […]

My September 2016 Monthly Income Report

Welcome to my September 2016 Monthly Income Report! Beyond the income and expense report, I’ll be sharing my experience at one of my favorite conferences, the results and strategy from a webinar I co-hosted with another company, and the “secret” launch within a small segment of my email list here on SPI for a brand new product I’m validating. Here we go! Latest Goings-On in September “Do you remember the twenty-first night of September?” Bonus points for anyone who knows that reference 🙂 September was a great month, which started with a family trip to Disneyland. Yes, we visit Disneyland a lot, but not always to just walk around the park. Sometimes we run! This time, my wife was signed up to run the Disneyland Half Marathon. In fact, she registered for the “challenge,” which combined a 10k run on Saturday, and a half marathon on Sunday. That’s 19.3 miles […]

SPI 233: A Not-So-Overnight Entrepreneurial Success Story with Shayna from Espresso English

I’m back with another online business success story I know you guys are going to love. Today’s guest is Shayna Oliveira, founder of EspressoEnglish.net, and she’s brought some words of wisdom on the long and unpredictable road to entrepreneurial success. When Shayna published her first ebook back in 2012, she didn’t wake up to overnight success. In fact, six months into building her online business, she was still only seeing small, incremental growth. That didn’t stop her, however. Through hard work, persistence, and smart strategy, Shayna transformed Espresso English into her full-time source of income, allowing her to quit her day job and focus on teaching English to her devoted online audience. It’s easy to fixate on the flashy, exciting “overnight success” stories of the online business world. But it’s stories like Shayna’s—where smart, committed business owners pursue their goals in spite of daunting odds—that pack the truly valuable lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs. Enjoy! Thanks for Listening! Thanks so […]

SPI 224: Hack Teaching—A Discussion about Education and Getting Results with Mark Barnes

I’m joined this week by Mark Barnes, creator of HackLearning.org. As a longtime educator, Mark is passionate about transforming education, both in traditional classrooms and online course communities. When Mark found that his by-the-book style wasn’t having the impact he wanted on his middle school and high school classrooms, he set out to find a different approach. What he’s found are a new set of habits and strategies—”hacks”—that improve communication, efficiency, and trust in the classroom. Mark’s here to share his perspective on the role of educators, his advice for cultivating bonds with your students, and some of his favorite tools for running a classroom. Mark’s wisdom isn’t just for conventional teachers, either—whether you run an online course, a blog, or a small business, there’s something here for you to learn. As a course creator, business owner, and parent to a school-age kiddo, I was so grateful to hear Mark’s take on how we can […]

John Lee Dumas is back! And this time, he’s here to share the incredible story of how he raised half a million dollars with his latest Kickstarter campaign. John is the host of the hugely popular Entrepreneur on Fire podcast. Today, however, he’s going to dig deep into a totally different project: The Freedom Journal, a beautiful, leather-bound journal that guides you through a 100-day journey toward achieving a specific goal. John could have sold the journal through Amazon or churned out a downloadable PDF version, but instead, he chose to offer his Freedom Journals to his audience via a Kickstarter campaign. In this episode, you’ll hear how John set himself up for Kickstarter success, and how he’s transformed his campaign into an ongoing source of passive income. Ramit Sethi is back on the show this week, and as usual, he’s brought some serious strategy with him. Today, he’s talking all about matching your digital products or services with the perfect price point for your audience. I discovered Ramit and his blog back in 2006, before I became an entrepreneur myself. He taught me valuable lessons about online business, building wealth, and designing an income. Ten years later, he continues to teach me so much! I’ve invited him on the Smart Passive Income Podcast twice before (for Episodes 92 and 170), and it’s my pleasure to have him back today. You’ll hear Ramit’s hard-won wisdom on identifying your audience’s pain points, designing the product they crave most, finding qualified customers, and guiding them through to purchase. Ramit also gets honest about pricing your products, the danger of discounts, and how often he sees entrepreneurs fail to value their products appropriately. Strategies for Getting Course Customers to Take Action

This month we’ve been talking a lot about online courses. We’ve spoken with people who have created successful online courses and to those who have even created online course software. There’s a lot of material in the Smart Passive Income archive where we’ve talked with people who have launched and successfully profited from creating online courses too, including SPI 136: How to Build an Online Course that Sells with David Siteman Garland, and SPI 137: A Product Launch Sequence That Works—How to Create a 3-Part Video Series with Amy Porterfield. In this post, I wanted to highlight ten specific strategies to help your course customers follow through and take action on what you’re teaching. One of the biggest struggles course creators have is trying to get course customers to take action. The reason why that’s so important is common: Online course creators spend a bunch of time building the courses, […]

SPI 218: Starting an Online Course? Best Practices and Getting People to Follow Through with Ankur from Teachable.com

My guest today is the creator of an online platform that’s become an essential part of my business. He’s Ankur Nagpal, and that platform is Teachable.com. I’ve talked a lot about how great online courses can be for evangelizing your business, building community, growing your customer base, and providing massive amounts of value to your audience. Ankur believes this too, which is why he built a platform that makes it easier for course creators to find their ideal audience—and create income in the process. Today, Ankur’s sharing everything he’s learned about what makes a successful online course and the most common mistakes he sees first-time course creators make. You’ll also learn about Teachable’s creation, from its early successes to the roadblocks it encountered along the way. I love Teachable—I’m even using it now for my free Will It Fly? companion course—and I love what online courses can do for entrepreneurs and their audiences. Listen in, and learn why. Thanks […]

How to Repurpose Your Blog Content Like a Machine (+ Reader Challenge!)

We put a lot of hard work into the content we publish. It takes planning, loads of time, and sometimes a lot of courage too. Unfortunately, much of that effort is wasted because we often publish our content in one place, share it a few times, and just dust off our hands hoping for the best. All of us, myself included, are missing out on opportunities to repurpose the content we work so hard to create. There are many different ways to repurpose the content to benefit our brands l, including growing our email lists, expanding our social reach, and even making more money. In this post, I’ll be sharing a number of ways that we can turn one piece of content into several. Let’s do this! Is It “Copy-Paste” Simple? Back in the day, repurposing content was as easy as copying content you’ve already written and posting it elsewhere, […]

Smart Passive Income Podcast listener John Filippini is on the other end of the phone today, and he’s on the hunt for ways to take his business to the next level. While I’ll be the one doing the “coaching” in this episode, John knows a thing or two about being a coach as well—he’s a weightlifting coach serving the fitness community in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Weightlifting is John’s passion, and he wants to share that passion with an even greater audience. He wants to reach folks who might not think of themselves as weightlifters or realize all the great things weightlifting can do for their health and well-being. John wants to start a movement, but with so many possible next steps, he’s not sure where to begin. That’s where I come in. Together, John and I outline both long-term possibilities for his business and short-term actions he can take […]

SPI 209: The Power of Community—How Noah Bradley Made Art Camp

It’s my pleasure to introduce you to Noah Bradley IV. Not only is Noah an incredible visual artist (Magic: The Gathering, anyone?), but he’s also the founder of an incredible community and online school called Art Camp. Before founding Art Camp, Noah was frustrated by the options available to fellow artists who wanted a quality education. Art school isn’t cheap, and many artists take on enormous debt in order to get the training they need. Noah saw a way to help: he’d offer up his years of professional experience in an online course, using a series of videos to teach key skills to fellow artists. Today, Art Camp isn’t just a profitable passive income stream for Noah—it’s a thriving community of artists who support and learn from each other online. Noah’s here with me to share how that community grew, plus the tools he uses to produce and maintain his course material. He’ll also open […]

I hope you like the new look and feel! As always, I will continue to include the knowledge and lessons I’ve picked up over the past month. […]
