The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins: Issue 62

I read The 5 Second Rule (Amazon link) because of an amazing TED talk Mel Robbins gave, which led me to Mel’s YouTube channel, which led me to her book! I was immediately drawn to her personality and honesty, and I think you will be too. [Full Disclosure: As an affiliate, I receive compensation if you purchase through this link.] The central thesis of the book is essentially a micro version of the advice, “just get started,” a thing we hear all the time in business because all of us procrastinate. In Mel’s approach, to counter procrastination, we should count down from five before we start something, even as simple as waking up in the morning. Like a countdown for a rocket launch, once you get to five seconds, you’re basically committed and should just do what you know you need to do. I really enjoyed Mel’s language and style too. She’s […]

Hooked by Nir Eyal: Issue 37 | April 2017

I re-read Hooked (Amazon link) because, as you may have seen, I am in the process of developing a physical product. It’s sort of an experiment, and you can check that out here. So, with that physical product experiment on my brain, I’ve been thinking about how to make something that people will be “hooked” by. The book is about forming habits, and how certain products can help people create new and positive habits in their lives. [Full Disclosure: As an affiliate, I receive compensation if you purchase through this link.] The cool part about it is that Nir breaks down the science of habit-forming into a simple, easy to digest four-part formula. The fact that he was able to do that was really surprising to me, and I admire him for it. Nir even includes exercises at the end of each section with questions for the readers to ask themselves about their […]

Everything Is Figureoutable by Marie Forleo: Issue 65 | October 2019

Marie Forleo is someone I’ve looked up to for a very long time. We connected at a Pencils of Promise Gala a few years ago, and she’s just as kind and engaging in person as she is on her popular YouTube channel, and on her website. She helps women (mainly) start successful businesses. She’s the founder of B-School, an amazing program that many of you may have heard, or have even graduated from. I know that one of the greats Amy Porterfield has! I have not taken B-School myself, but I’ve interacted with Marie’s videos and website content and engaged with her in person, and I just love her style, her personality, and I was excited to learn about her new book. I personally asked her for a galley copy early before launch so that I could read it and potentially feature it here in this book club! I’m excited I did, because […]

The Road Back to You by Ian Cron: Issue 64 | August 2019

A lot has led me to read this book. It started when I visited Michael Hyatt in Tennessee to film a project, and Michael and his team asked me if I heard of the Enneagram and if I knew my number. Someone was a type 3 with a 4-wing, another person said they were a type 1, and another said she was confused at first but did some more digging to learn she was a type 9. I was confused at first too, but they explained that your Enneagram number is sort of like a profile of the kind of person you are, the best parts of you, the worst parts of you, what you like and dislike, how you respond to situations, and what your superpowers and weaknesses might be. By knowing the kind of person you are through the lens of the Enneagram, you better understand who are […]

How to Market a Book (Hint: It Starts Before You Write!)

Over the past few years, I’ve collected a lot of knowledge about book marketing. Some of it has been based on my own experiences and the mistakes I’ve made, and some from the amazing guests I’ve had on my podcast. In this post, I wanted to create a directory of all the book marketing (and writing and publishing) knowledge here on SPI so that when you sit down to write your own book, you’ll have a head start. I’m so thankful for the launch team, and everyone on #TeamFlynn who not only purchased the book, but also posted about it on social and shared it with their friends, family, and followers. This was the space where I recorded a ton of YouTube videos, course videos, and livestreams, as well as hosted a lot of team meetings. It was a special space, and I grew to love it very much. But because of the break-in and the lack of security in the business complex where this office was located, I decided it was time to move out and find a new space. Here’s how that process has unfolded, and the exciting new partnership that has emerged! Losing Gear and Dealing with Fear Shortly after the break-in happened, I published a YouTube video showing what happened. I also got a little emotional about it, mostly because it just felt very […]

Buying and Reselling Items from Stores on Amazon (Revisited)

Jessica Larrew: We love the thrill of the hunt. We like looking for stuff that’s exciting, that we get big huge margins on. That people go, “Why would somebody pay sixty dollars for a bottle of cleaning stuff?” Pat Flynn: You’re listening to Jessica Larrew who’s also here on this episode with Cliff, her husband, and they’re back on the SPI Podcast coming from Episode 99. This was over five years ago and this is one of the most popular episodes. This is the one that I get a lot of emails about because a lot of people have taken what Jessica and Cliff shared in that episode, Episode 99, and have actually implemented it. Some people getting more money on the side and others even quitting their jobs to start this what’s called retail arbitrage business. It’s an interesting, different way of building a business and I wanted to […]

How to Actually Make Progress and Grow Your Business—A Conversation with James Wedmore

James Wedmore: Commitment, and people toss this word around, oh, I’m committed Pat, I’ll tell you, I’m committed. Committed is not when I feel like it and when it’s convenient and when it’s not scary. Commitment is whatever it takes. And so when— Pat Flynn: Ooh, such powerful stuff we’re discussing today with my good friend James Wedmore, host of the Mind Your Business Podcast. He says that hustle and hard work are not essential ingredients for success. Success is created by mindset over strategy. And when it comes to who we want to be and how we can get to where we want to go, the biggest thing is the mindset. And how often do we say that we’re going to do something yet we don’t follow through? How often do we throw that word, “commitment,” around, I’m committed to doing this, whether it’s in our business for our […]

The Boom (or Bubble) of Podcasting?

Is this the boom or bubble of podcasting? Is podcasting the new blogging? Explore why podcasts are a big deal, podcast tips, podcast sponsorships, and more! Pat Flynn June 10, 2019 Somebody recently asked me the question, “Pat, do you think podcasting is in a boom . . . or a bubble? . . . One that’s perhaps about to pop?” I’m about to answer that question in this post. Is Podcasting the New Blogging? Kind Of! Now, it’s not like blogging ever popped and dropped off the radar. Blogs are still hugely popular today—but I also think podcasts are having their day now. If you go to Google trends and compare the terms “blogs” and “podcasts,” you’ll notice that in 2017 the two kind of crossed over. That’s right: podcasting is on the up and up. The trend is clear, and there’s definitely still growth and opportunity in podcasting […]

The Psychology of Money and Wealth with Ramit Sethi

Pat Flynn: So I like to mix things up here on the Smart Passive Income Podcast. This is a very different kind of episode, you’re going to be transported to the city of New York. I actually conducted a walking interview, through the city of New York, with a good friend of mine, Ramit Sethi. I was in New York for some interviews and to meet some people and some retailers, related to the SwitchPod. And I was there with Caleb and he said, why don’t we just try this thing? And so we did it, it’s a learning process. You’ll hear at the beginning of the episode, my mic was a little bit hot because I was holding it close to me. You’ll also probably hear how cold I was. I was losing my breath a little bit, because it was twenty-five degrees Fahrenheit. Which for me, being from […]

Why People Really Hate Us Online

Pat Flynn: Stop talking, because nobody cares. You are a complete idiot— Speaker 2: You are a complete idiot from head to toe. Speaker 3: Go do something that actually matters. Speaker 4: Why were you even born? Pat: . . . I hate you. Speaker 2: I hate you. Pat: These are some powerful words that I’ve read online about myself. Now, nobody has ever said any of these things to me in person, but it doesn’t really matter because when I read these things online, it hurts. I don’t know if you’ve ever been targeted for hate online. Whether it’s a comment on a YouTube video, or your blog, or a reply on social media, or something that you read in a forum somewhere, it doesn’t matter. It never feels good no matter how much people tell you that those are things you should just ignore. I’ve been […]
